hi this is Miss Densmore I'm in room 142 which is directly across from the library and accessible by email which I've highlighted in this blue document and I'm available to help with earning your credit for your English class last year in the 1920 school year we went remote right and for a lot of people that meant it was difficult for them to stay engaged for many people they still need to earn credit because they are in the next level of their English but do not yet have a passing grade so you've been emailed this document 0327 times now and do their some dates and hear that are no longer accurate I will use this is our jump off everything you need is in here ways to contact me links to my office hours and I can help you in person or remotely using Google meet all you need to do is reach let me know how to help you but there's a lot of information in here including the way that you'll be graded on this but what I really want to focus on is how to access the notebook in the notebook is where you'll be putting all of your work notebook is a writing and reading tool so again everything you need is right in there I'm also going to add you to an eagle block classroom looks a little something like this with the Majestic Katahdin in the background and there'll resources in ways to access help in this classroom as well the lots of ways to receive help on the project I'm going to walk you through the process using the English one documents you're an English 3 student and you're trying to make up English two or you're a senior and you're trying to make up English 3 you click on these links instead and in truth what you'll find is that as you move up in your grade level there's a little bit more writing involved and there's a little bit more work with your analysis so in in other words finding the topic and developing a theme statement something that makes a astute a smart reflection on that particular hero's journey stage the story Model that you're going to be using is a great one because you're going to be looking at a story with mythological characters and monsters menu probably seen or heard of before and you're going to be comparing that story to a hero's journey movie of your choice so let's look at that hero's journey movie list looking at the movies in this list you'll see at the top I say this isn't everything there are certainly lots of hero's journey movies that are not on this list that really be excellent for analysis find these all share in common is that there's one main character who has a goal or a mission and in order to achieve it they have to go through a series of trials they are awarded in their attempts to do good they might even decide they want to turn back at certain points but all the while they are working towards reaching this goal weather has been forced upon it them as Simba in being The Lion King He has to go through a hero's journey to take that role from his evil Uncle to the Lion King's a really strong Choice any of these animated choices are excellent also perhaps your ear into something that's a little bit more live-action may be looking at all those animated movies just makes you cringe thinking about watching your siblings and let your like I can't watch Frozen one more time I'll lose it will then choose something on this list you can see that there are lots of options here if you are into superhero films choose one if you're into darker film I'm sure you can find some Heroes Journeys that fulfill that look at we can also get into the the funny right The Princess Bride is a hero's journey but definitely very fun at the same time so I want you to choose something that you will maybe already have seen but that you'll be able to do a strong analysis with and the goal who is to choose a movie and to map it out using a graphic organizer that I have for you here in classroom remember I said I'm going to add you to classroom know what you're going to do is you're going to say okay if you want to make a call Begin work on this at home or print it go for it noticed these are huge chunks of space if you collect is your watching your movie The Call to Adventure from your movie meeting the mentor from your meeting the Shadow Self this document serve you very well as you go into the notebook and do your writing so I would use this as a note catcher while you're watching your movie now if you do not have streaming access at your house if you need access to a film just asked me I can get you in touch with RIT team in our library team and we will get you streaming or DVD or Blu-ray axis as soon as possible so many things that are available in the eagle block classroom stepping on everybody has access to unless they're in here the other part that I do want to show you was also here and that you go block classroom now usually when I say to a student would you like to write an essay or do a small self-reflection they've been saying small self-reflection Miss Densmore again this is linked in classroom and if you choose to do this self-reflection there's an essay in the notebook you don't have to do let me repeat that I will eliminate an entire section of the hero's journey notebook if you do this self-reflection so definitely worth your time okay let's go to that notebook now write a little bit about and I talked a little bit about how everything you need is in here I am going to show you a lot of stuff right now again keep in mind I am showing you the English one notebook and if you're doing the English 2 or 3 days going to look a little bit different right of course we're going to little bit more of you so let's imagine that you have your hero's journey movie picked out it's probably a great idea to start here and watch these videos what they will do is give you background on the Odyssey which is story you'll be reading in this notebook and they'll also explain the hero's journey so that it as you're going along and say watching Happy Gilmore you can fill out each of happy stay just through the hero's journey there is a tie resource for you as well this one is very comprehensive and complete but the name of this is the hero's journey and you will find lots and lots of materials on the interwebs should you want to supplement your research I've also resources to go are you at the bottom in case you want to see a movie of The Odyssey or do some continue to research so if I were you you've watched this video you're going to watch that video you're going to watch this video you're going to watch your own hero's journey movie I know it seems like a lot of video but if you think about it this way that's about two and a half hours of your life and maybe it's a little bit more than two and a half because you went and did the self-reflection so you don't have to do the essay you were on the top of the mountain now the rest of this is easy peasy smooth sailing there's not a lot of reading and writing that is complicated or complex it important to be concise meaning to pick important detail it's important to be detailed meaning when I'm asking for your analysis to pick something that's very Salient so I mention here that it's going to take you about three to four hours you know that very dependent on student work case for most students going through stages 1 and 2 as I said about 2 and 1/2 hours most students are spending about two and a half hours on stage 3 so for you that might be a little quicker might be a little longer the video I'm sharing with you here right now is linked in the notebook as well Pearson contact info now the beautiful thing about this is you get to ignore quite a bit unless you're trying to make up honors credit so if you are trying to make up honors English 1 2 or 3 you do need to complete this map of the Journey of Odysseus now you'll learn as you go along when you read the first story you'll fill in the location for number to reading the next Dory the location for 3 and someone again this is only if you are trying to remediate honors-level credit furthermore the next part is super fun but only have to complete this section if you were trying to remediate honors-level credit so for the majority of students watching this video right now you're going to skip the map and you're going to say the deaf math as well as fun as that sounds but whether you do those first two steps or not in the notebook everyone ends here on each place that you're do I'm writing you have this map in front of you as a reminder of the journey and its processes circular hero such as Harry Potter goes through this and every book right is called to Adventure goes through the cycle through the wrap up and then in the next book is called to Adventure close to the wrap up in the cycle say things happening with the adventure other movies like that this cycle can be repeated over and over so what you hear is look for the directions read are all the directions for each section and the other important color in the sections is green and I'll show you that in a moment anytime you see something underlined because there's information behind it so be sure watch that first video then you can figure out why was Odysseus Call to Adventure you know he's leaving the Trojan War he's the guy that came up with that cool Trojan Horse idea but now he's leaving the war where is he go I'm going to explain that here I'm looking for a sentence or two to explain the stage by this point now you know a little bit about the Odyssey and you've watched a movie which movie did you select insert the title here and then tell me why you selected it I've seen this movie 20 bazillion times maybe I've always wanted an excuse to watch a movie and my dad was excited about this and knew he can help me with the work whatever the reason is what information here now as far as the writing portion these are the two bigger chunks As you move on so for instance if you are an English 3 makeup you're going to have another section of this bus very important please use specific details from your movie and the story but notice I'm only looking for three to four sentences that compare the hero's journey steps The Odyssey to the hero's journey step in the movie you watched look at the example I give you for Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games this is an honors level entry again if you're an honor student I'm looking for it's about eight to ten sentences for most people that are listening to me right now we're looking for three to four sentences yo what is that road of Trials what is the cause Adventure go ahead and click on these links reminder anything that's underlined is a hyperlink this is a text document that will explain the stages and helped prompt you to do writing here all directions give you a nice give what's required read those closely major way through this writing and this writing now you're going to be on number I said you were at the top of the mountain you're really on the downslope now because this is going to be a very rich additive process from here on out again you see the map which is signifying hey probably talkin about a new stage in the hero's journey and we are we're getting to the part of meeting the Shadow Self right so are has begun their journey and now it's time for them to meet the Shadow Self so you're going to explain after you click on the story in green read it you're going to explain here who is the Shadow Self Road how do you know that right in full sentences please then think about your your movie who is the Shadow Self from Moana who is the Shadow Self for Bilbo I want you to pick a movie you're going to be able to do really good work with her right so that you can easily say I know who this is right before I even before I get into it when you click on the screen link it's going to bring you to a nip resource some of the links are 7 to 10 paragraphs long summer only two so this process for most people reading the story King menes probably takes about 10 to 15 minutes they wrap up the stage then by writing a theme now a reminder for you seeing this basically the life lesson that can be learned from reading this part of the story A Life Lesson meaning something you learned from this part of the story or it's an observation about the way humans behave or react or interact there's a lot here so in this part of our story Odysseus is taunting the Cyclops the one-eyed monster right so when we're talking about life lessons you can drop quite a few here right now if you are an English 3 student you will have to come up with more than one theme when you from practicing for way longer and that's not hard if it is though you know where to find me reach out I'm happy to help you so guess what I said you're on the downhill slope you really are because as you move on in the notebook you're going to do the same thing over and over click on the green link read the myth web story right about the stage from The Odyssey right about that stage from your movie provide A Life Lesson or observation about human nature based on that stage oh my gosh look at this friend's you will only click the green link read story right about the stage for Odysseus right about the stage from the movie and then just be sure you're reading The Works room I will spare you you're down with the technique right now this is slightly different link but a reminder anything that I'm offering to you is a link that I want you to use in your project your last step you're going to get the end of our hero's journey right and you're going to write about the climax again here's a story for you you're going to write about the resurrection and you're going to write about the wrap-up in the past I was asking you to identify stay for comparison however this is just about the Odyssey so you're leaving your movie Behind in this writing the climax in The Odyssey is the resurrection stage in The Odyssey is the wrap up The Odyssey is again I give you a text and video resource for you so please use those to your advantage finally I asked you to come up with a theme based on mean higher hero's journey so there's a lot to pick from now I said if you are feeling like you could do some self-reflection you can get rid of a piece of the work will hear it as friends you do that self-reflection that is posted in the eagle block of Google form called Eagle block self-reflection you don't have to do this essay however if you choose not to do the reflection you do me how to complete the last but not least a say now why do we need to do this I've asked you to do to analyze stories right so I'll be checking your reading comprehension that way I've asked you to write informationally this is detail here's how I use descriptive language finally you need to make an argument here right this is answering a question so you're going to make an argument and you're going to use evidence from either you know the Odyssey or the hero's journey you've developed here to answer your question she can see how this is also a very essential piece however that self-reflection is also an argumentative writing piece because you're trying to tell me who you are and why you didn't have and what I could do to make sure that that doesn't happen to you again a couple of options for you finally my friends these are reading guide questions if you're someone who really likes having questions when you begin reading so that you know what you're looking for please printer access these before you start your sections because they will really help you pick up the important details and then if you would like my friends are all kinds of awesome Reese down here for the Odyssey and most of these are really great but if you're a real movie buff go ahead and watch this version of The Odyssey from 1997 so yeah the qualities dude I see but it's certainly a great story to watch visually because as you can tell he's going to go through a lot of troubles and tribulations as he needs beautiful women and has to make choices will he remain loyal to his lady as he sees his guys trying to avoid their problems by taking drugs or stealing from others he has to decide what's the moral outcome he wants the best voice so I hope you enjoy this project insofar as it's something you have to do for school but I hope it Taps into your knowledge about mythology about the way that humans are in the world I hope you find it this is a nice and easy way for you to make up your credit and I hope that you reach out
