Essential Questions: What is impaired driving? Are there various degrees of impaired driving? What activity is most dangerous? What is the aftermath of impaired driving? What is the structure and purpose of an annotated bibliography?

Goal: Students will explain their understanding of the effects of impaired driving through research and expository writing.

Learning Targets: I can identify several different citation styles and the principles of citation. I can locate, identify, and use resources responsibly, efficiently, and ethically to complete my project. I can make reasonable assertions about an author’s arguments by using elements of the text to defend and clarify interpretations. I can evaluate the effectiveness of the organizational structure of an informational text. I can synthesize the content from several sources or texts dealing with a question or problem. I will demonstrate a command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. I can identify MLA citation styles and the principles of citation. I can identify my strengths and weaknesses in the research process and set goals for improvement. I can locate, identify, and use resources responsibly, efficiently, and ethically to complete my project.

Essential Questions: What are the characteristics of a short story? What is justice? What is the relationship between courage and responsibility? How do experiences shape our personal identity? How does foreshadowing create suspense?

Learning Targets: I can identify a key scene or character in a text and explain why it is important. I can identify the plot structure of a text and explain why it is important. I can identify a theme or main claim and find examples to support that theme/claim.

Student Assignments: Students will complete the reading of a complex short story, analyzing the elements of plot, theme, foreshadowing, and suspense.
